#20 Historic farmhouse with basement

The Casale stands on the highest elevation overlooking the unspoiled valley. Belonging in the 18th century to a religious sect, a few decades later a third wing was added to the already important building, giving the former convent its current horseshoe design. The Casale estate gradually began to be populated with new farmhouses, farm buildings and fountains. For its industrial archaeological importance, the perpetual motion Water Pump (invented in the late 18th century) – the only surviving example in operation in Italy – certainly deserves a mention. An Etruscan aqueduct still in use, small fragments of a Roman villa emerging from the tillage of the land. Ancient artefacts dating back to the Paleolithic period, kept in the innermost parts of the estate spanning a wide succession of very ancient eras. Today the farm, in addition to wild farming, is also engaged in the cultivation of vines and olive trees.
